2004 Scholarship
Dear Friends:
The first Martin G. Patterson Scholarship was announced on Wednesday July 14, 2004. The recipient of the $1,700 scholarship is Natalie Jones, a junior studying nursing at Brigham Young University. Natalie is the daughter of Jeff Jones, a foreign service officer with FAS. Although Natalie was not available for announcement, there will be an award ceremony held at a later date.
Currently, over $17,100 has been donated to the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) Scholarship Fund by 93 individuals and organizations in memory of Marty. These contributions (along with any other donations that are received) establishes the Martin G. Patterson Scholarship which will be awarded under AFSA's Financial Aid Scholarship program.
Because the original donation stays protected and only the interest is used as the scholarship award, it will last in perpetuity. As a general guide, AFSA uses a 10% rate of return. Biographical information on Marty and his family will be shared with the scholarship recipient each year so the student can learn about their Foreign Service connection. The student's thank you letter will also be forwarded to the Patterson family.
