Each year the recipient of Marty’s award will be provided biographical information on him and his family so the young person can understand the Foreign Service connection.

Will AFSA accept credit cards?

Yes, credit card (Master Card and Visa) donations are accepted.  If making a donation this way, please include your name, card number, expiration date, address, phone/email and amount to be donated.  For your convenience, a letter has been created to facilitate your donation.  If you wish to contribute via telephone, please contact Lori Dec at 202-944-5504 or 1-800-704-2372 ext. 504.

Will the donations go to the Patterson family?

No. This AFSA scholarship would be bestowed under AFSA’s Financial Aid Scholarship Program as a need-based, undergraduate, college scholarship to a child of a FAS or APHIS Foreign Service Officer.  Marty's family has encouraged and supported this scholarship project.

Are donations tax deductible?

Yes.  All donations are tax deductible.  The AFSA Scholarship Fund is an IRS Chapter 501(c) (3) designated not for profit organization. In accordance with IRS regulations, donor gifts over $250 will be sent an acknowledgement for your tax records. Before making a planned gift, we recommend that you meet with your attorney or tax advisor to discuss the financial and tax implications of your charitable contribution. 

Is this different from the "Martin Patterson Fund"?

Yes. The Martin Patterson Fund is a memorial fund that has been established at the Agricultural Federal Credit Union (AFCU) to help Marty's family over the next few months.  You can send a check made out to the "Martin Patterson Fund" to Larry Deaton, USDA/FAS, SOAGBLG-Stop 1049, 1400 Independence Ave, SW, Wash DC 20250-1049, who will deposit it into the account.  Donations to this fund are not tax deductible.
