The Martin G. Patterson Scholarship
Dear Friends:
The first Martin G. Patterson Scholarship was announced on Wednesday July 14, 2004. The recipient of the $1,700 scholarship is Natalie Jones, a junior studying nursing at Brigham Young University. Natalie is the daughter of Jeff Jones, a foreign service officer with FAS. Although Natalie was not available for announcement, there will be an award ceremony held at a later date.
Currently, over $17,100 has been donated to the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) Scholarship Fund by 93 individuals and organizations in memory of Marty. These contributions (along with any other donations that are received) establishes the Martin G. Patterson Scholarship which will be awarded under AFSA's Financial Aid Scholarship program.
As you may know, Marty was a Foreign Service Officer at the Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS), and member of AFSA, who passed away on July 3, 2003. His wife Constanza, an Economic Research Service (ERS) employee and their three daughters, Alicia, Sylvia and Mariana survive him. He served in Singapore and Caracas.
I want to inform you to contributions to the memorial Martin G. Patterson Scholarship are still being accepted. Those wishing to contribute to this scholarship may send a check payable to the “AFSA Scholarship Fund” noting on the check “In Memory of Martin Patterson”. Donations may be sent to Lori Dec, Scholarship Director, AFSA Scholarship Program, 2101 E Street NW, Washington, DC 20037. Credit card (Master Card and Visa) donations are also accepted. If making a donation this way, please include your name, card number, expiration date, address, phone/email and amount to be donated. All donations will be sent an acknowledgement for tax purposes. For your convenience, a letter has been created to facilitate your donation via fax or mail.
Each year the recipient of Marty’s award will be provided biographical information on him and his family so the young person can understand the Foreign Service connection. Please help us make this constructive and loving tribute to Marty’s memory.
