UPDATE ON THE MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS
Dear Friends:
As of October 23, 2003, $14,553.75 has been donated to the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) Scholarship Fund by 68 individuals and organizations in memory of Marty. These contributions (along with any other donations that are received) establishes the Martin G. Patterson Scholarship which will be awarded under AFSA's Financial Aid Scholarship program. AFSA Financial Aid scholarships are annual, need-based awards ranging from $1,000-$3,000 bestowed to children of Foreign Service employees to assist in meeting their undergraduate college expenses.
The Martin G. Patterson Scholarship will be specifically awarded to a child of an FAS or APHIS employee. This is the first "FAS" designated award in AFSA's Scholarship Program. The first Martin G. Patterson Scholarship will be awarded in August 2004 to coincide with the beginning of the 2004/2005 academic year.
Because the original donation stays protected and only the interest is used as the scholarship award, it will last in perpetuity. As a general guide, AFSA uses a 10% rate of return. Biographical information on Marty and his family will be shared with the scholarship recipient each year so the student can learn about their Foreign Service connection. The student's thank you letter will also be forwarded to the Patterson family.
What a loving tribute to Marty from his, family, friends and colleagues.
